SafeAccess

    Home      SafeAccess

Globally, nearly one in three pregnancies end in abortion. But not everyone has a safe choice. We launched SafeAccess to support frontline implementers and advocates to help change this.

Around the world, 40% of women live in countries where abortion is banned, restricted or inaccessible. Sometimes abortion is heavily criminalised, often it’s just too difficult to access.

Restrictions on abortion drive women to difficult and dangerous decisions. The World Health Organization estimates that around half of all abortions that take place globally are unsafe, with millions of people denied access to safe abortion care. Every year, around 39,000 women die as a result, and millions more are hospitalised. This is unacceptable, and it is preventable.

Collaborating to support SafeAccess to abortion

The global pro-choice community has a significant role to play in changing this course. By collaborating across the sector, we can support providers to scale up solutions that work. But to do so, we need to ensure that our learnings are documented and shared, including in ways that are accessible and tangible for frontline practitioners and advocates.

That’s why, in 2019, MSI Reproductive Choices partnered with the Safe Abortion Action Fund, Ipas, IPPF and others to launch the SafeAccess Hub, now housed on the MSI website, sharing evidence-based, best practice guidance for implementers and advocates on abortion and post-abortion care.

With growing opposition to reproductive rights, it is more important than ever that our community comes together in support of the right to choose. As implementing organisations, we can share our own lessons on what works, with the hope that those on the frontline can use these learnings to expand access to life-saving care.
