The guidelines draw on the latest scientific and programmatic evidence and set out over 50 recommendations across clinical practice, health service delivery, and legal and policy interventions to expand access to quality abortion care.

MSI Reproductive Choices’ Global Medical Director, Dr Dhammika Perera, said:

“Abortion is an essential and common healthcare service needed by women everywhere, yet access to safe and legal abortion care remains out of reach for many. As a result of unsafe abortion, seven million women a year suffer complications and over 22,000 women die.

“As one of the world’s leading providers of abortion care, we were proud to contribute our clinical and programmatic evidence to the WHO’s new guideline on abortion care, which if implemented would transform access, save thousands of lives and give millions of women and girls control over their bodies and their futures.

We are delighted to see the world’s leading health body supporting the human rights of women and girls through access to abortion care that respects their needs and decisions. We look forward to working closely with the WHO and national governments to turn these recommendations into reality.”
