Through SafeAccess – our collaborative platform sharing resources on abortion care – we are sharing a selection of videos from partners explaining what you can expect from a medical and surgical abortion, and what is needed to self-manage a medical abortion safely.
Video: What is a medical abortion (abortion with pills) and how does it work?
A medical abortion is an abortion method usually used within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and involves taking abortion pills to end a pregnancy.
Our partners at IPPF have developed a short, animated video explaining the process, including how long the process usually takes, what medication is used, how it works, commons side effects, how to ease pain and discomfort and when to seek medical support.
The video is currently available in English, French, and Spanish.
Video: What is a surgical abortion and how does it work?
Up to 14 weeks of pregnancy, manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) is the recommended method of surgical abortion and offers a safe, quick and highly effective way to end a pregnancy.
To explain the procedure, IPPF have developed a short video explaining what to expect during and after the procedure and recovery period takes, including any side effects and how to best care for yourself after a surgical abortion.
The video is currently available in English, French, and Spanish.
