2024 is the biggest election year in history, with at least 64 national, presidential, or parliamentary elections taking place around the world. The outcome of these elections will shape the future of sexual and reproductive health and rights for generations to come. We’re calling on the world to choose choice on the ballot.

MSI’s analysis has found that there are an estimated 823 million women of reproductive age living in countries that have national, presidential, or parliamentary elections this year. This represents nearly half (43%) of all women of reproductive age globally.

The rights of many of these women will be directly impacted by these elections. And with elections also taking place in countries like the US and UK, which influence sexual and reproductive health and rights globally, via international funding and harmful policies like the Global Gag Rule, it is likely that more people will see their reproductive health and rights impacted.

Our short briefing shares global insights on how reproductive choice will be impacted by this year’s elections, as well as frontline stories from four of countries – Ghana, Mexico, Madagascar and the United States.
